Johannesburg’s future choral stars are preparing to take centre stage as the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Choir presents Voices of Tomorrow: A Choir Kaleidoscope, a collaborative concert celebrating young musical talent, creativity and community.
Taking place on Saturday, 1 August 2026 at 15:00 at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre in the UJ Arts Centre on the University’s Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park, the event will bring together talented school choirs from across Johannesburg for an inspiring afternoon of music.
Hosted by the UJ Choir, which forms part of UJ Arts & Culture within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), the concert aims to inspire the next generation of singers while strengthening connections between schools, communities and higher education.
A Platform for Tomorrow’s Choral Talent
Building on the spirit of sustainability, this year’s edition places the spotlight on the voices that will shape the future.
Rather than simply presenting a performance, Voices of Tomorrow offers young choristers the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre environment while experiencing a university arts space that encourages creativity, discipline and artistic growth.
Audiences can look forward to performances by:
- Curro Aurora
- Sacred Heart College Choir
- De La Salle Holy Cross College Senior Choir
- Roosevelt High School Choir
- Greenside High School Choir
Each choir will bring its own unique identity, musical style and school spirit, creating a rich programme that reflects the diversity, passion and promise of Johannesburg’s young performers.
Inspiring Future Generations
According to Sizwe Mondlane, UJ Choir Master, the concert is about much more than performance.
“Voices of Tomorrow: Choir Kaleidoscope is about creating space for young singers to feel seen, heard and encouraged. Our hope is that some of these young voices will one day become the voices that shape UJ Choir. We want them to see UJ as a place where their talent and creative potential can grow.”
The initiative highlights the important role music plays in youth development by giving learners valuable performance experience while encouraging them to imagine future opportunities within higher education and the performing arts.
Supporting Education Through Music
The concert also aligns with the University of Johannesburg Strategic Plan 2035, supporting the institution’s commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, positive societal impact and future-focused learning.
In addition, the initiative reflects the goals of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, recognising the arts as an important extension of learning that helps young people develop confidence, creativity, discipline and a sense of belonging.
By opening its stage to emerging talent, UJ Choir continues to demonstrate how music can connect schools, communities and universities while creating pathways for future artistic excellence.
