Exciting new developments are on the horizon for fans of kykNET’s Diepe Waters, as Vian Singleton makes a splash as Shane Kriek, a new character entering the drama series on Thursday 19 September. Shane, a handsome yet painfully shy 20-year-old, brings a fresh dynamic to the show’s storylines, particularly with his connection to Charity, the Olympic gold medallist.
Shane Kriek isn’t just a casual swimmer; he frequents Swartmarlyne for fitness and recreational swimming. While outwardly reserved, Shane’s charm and warmth shine through once he feels comfortable around someone. This complex character has an intriguing past that viewers will get to know soon.
Vian Singleton, known for his role as Thomas on 7de Laan, is thrilled to take on the role of Shane in Diepe Waters. “Shane is a friendly but shy soul who deeply cares about others. He’s brave enough to take leaps of faith when necessary, and I admire that about him,” says Singleton. The actor reflects on Shane’s impact in the storyline, especially as someone who pushes Charity to think about life beyond swimming. “Athletes have short careers, and Shane helps Charity see beyond her current identity, opening up new possibilities for her.”
Singleton’s acting journey began early, starring in his first commercial for Sunfoil alongside the Protea cricket players at age 10. He went on to feature in notable productions such as My Father’s War and toured with Fiela se Kind, playing the young Benjamin Komoetie. Most recently, Singleton was part of the cast of Valentynssokkie, further solidifying his versatility as an actor. His time on 7de Laan as Thomas, spanning six years, allowed him to explore various teenage storylines, from dealing with bullies to first loves.
Outside of acting, Singleton, a multi-talented individual, has excelled in sports. He played rugby and athletics in school and is an Intercontinental African Champion in kickboxing. He currently trains in MMA at CIT gym in Pretoria. Academically, he’s pursuing a degree in B.Com Financial Sciences at the University of Pretoria, balancing his love for acting with a passion for finance.
Vian is excited about reuniting with familiar faces on the Diepe Waters set. “Having worked with some of the cast and crew before, it felt comfortable from day one. The set is always fun, yet remains highly professional,” he shares. He enjoys the light-hearted moments on set, like early morning jokes with Kobus and Darren, the cameramen, and the table tennis matches between scenes.
