Walkabout Dates: ‘Ntlo E Etsamayang’ (The Walking House)

The University of Johannesburg Art Gallery, in partnership with Everard Read Gallery and the Embassy of Sweden Pretoria, would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all who were able to join us for the opening of the ‘Ntlo E Etsamayang’ exhibition on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

The UJ Arts Gallery was immersed in a profound spiritual and gratifying moment and celebrated Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi. Guests, alongside cherished family members and esteemed members of the artistic community, united to pay homage to the profound journey of Sebidi, celebrating the rich exchange of knowledge between South Africa and Sweden.

As the exhibition unfolded, the air resonated with soulful melodies, weaving an atmosphere of enchantment.  The outpouring of love and admiration reverberated throughout the gallery, creating a truly memorable experience for all in attendance.

Once again, our sincerest appreciation goes out to each and every one of you who contributed to the success of this momentous occasion. Your presence and support are invaluable as we continue to celebrate and promote the richness of artistic expression.

For those who were unable to join us, Paul Mills captured the opening programme.
Join us as we explore the sensational atmosphere of the opening, filled with special guest performances that paid homage to the artist’s remarkable journey.

You still have an opportunity to come and experience ‘Ntlo E Etsamayang’ at the UJ Art Gallery through guided walkabouts by Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi alongside co-curator, Gabriel Baard on the following dates.

  • 10 April 2024, 12:00-13:00 – Mmakgabo Sebidi with Bongani Ngobese praise performance and orchestra.
  • 13 April 2024, 11:00-12:00 – Mmakgabo Sebidi in conversation with Andries Olifant. Discusing the search for her artworks in the 90’s.
  • 20 April 2024, 11:00-12:00 – TBC
  • 4 May 2024, 12:00-13:00 – Mmakgabo Sebidi in conversation with Sophia Trappler. Discussing the influence of the Johannesburg Art Foundation, and Sebidi’s artistic development.
  • 11 May 2024, 11:00-12:00 – Mmakgabo Sebidi in conversation with Dr Gcina Mhlope.
