For fifteen years, one of Johannesburg’s most beloved cultural traditions has proven that great music does not need a ticket price to bring people together.
This June, the spirit of artistic freedom, community celebration and musical discovery returns as Fête de la Musique marks its milestone 15th edition in Johannesburg, transforming Victoria Yards into a vibrant stage where established stars and emerging talent will share the spotlight.
Taking place on Saturday, 20 June 2026, the free-entry festival promises another unforgettable day of live performances, cultural exchange and creative expression, continuing a legacy that has connected audiences through the universal language of music.
A Global Celebration with Local Soul
First launched in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique has grown into one of the world’s largest music celebrations, now observed in more than 120 countries.
Built around a simple but powerful idea — free music for everyone — the festival encourages musicians of all backgrounds and experience levels to perform in public spaces while making live music accessible to audiences of every age.
Since arriving in Johannesburg 15 years ago, the festival has become a cherished fixture on the city’s cultural calendar, known for showcasing South Africa’s rich musical diversity while creating opportunities for artistic exchange and community engagement.
A Standout Line-Up for a Landmark Edition
The 2026 edition brings together a carefully curated selection of artists chosen from more than 300 applications reviewed by a panel of local and international music experts.
Leading the programme are some of South Africa’s most respected contemporary voices.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Zoë Modiga joins genre-defying collective The Brother Moves On and celebrated alternative R&B artist lordkez as headline acts for this year’s festival.
They will be joined by an exciting mix of established and emerging performers, including Renaissance, [kimetsu.], Zykes Madiga, Thoknique, Namakau Star, Tessi Nandi, Thula Khumalo, Measuretutti Vocal Ensemble, Little Music School in the Valley, Shameless Band, Lesedi Ntsane and Khulu.
The full programme is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Ahead of the Johannesburg celebration, selected artists will also perform at the Alliance Française of Pretoria on Saturday, 13 June 2026, extending the festival’s reach to audiences in Tshwane.
Continuing a Rich Musical Legacy
Over the years, Fête de la Musique has introduced audiences to some of South Africa’s most influential artists while providing an important platform for emerging voices.
Previous editions have featured celebrated performers including Msaki, BCUC, Samthing Soweto, Vaudou Game, Nakhane, Sun-El Musician and Bongeziwe Mabandla.
This commitment to nurturing talent while celebrating musical excellence remains at the heart of the festival’s identity.
As Johannesburg’s music scene continues to evolve, Fête de la Musique serves as both a reflection of the city’s creative energy and a launchpad for the next generation of artists.
More Than Just a Music Festival
While music remains the central attraction, Fête de la Musique has always been about more than performances alone.
The festival encourages public participation, artistic collaboration and cultural dialogue in shared public spaces, creating opportunities for audiences and artists to connect beyond traditional concert settings.
This year, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to engage with RedCircle by TEDxJohannesburg, an interactive platform inviting visitors to share one-minute ideas inspired by music, creativity and community.
The initiative will feature surprise appearances from poets, performers and creative thinkers, adding another layer of engagement to the day’s programme.
A Commitment to Sustainability
The 2026 edition is also placing greater emphasis on environmental responsibility.
In partnership with the Keep it CKlean (KiCK) initiative, organisers are implementing measures designed to reduce the festival’s environmental footprint.
Waste separation stations will be placed throughout the venue, while food waste collection and community clean-up activities will help ensure Victoria Yards remains a sustainable and welcoming creative space during and after the event.
The initiative reflects a growing commitment among cultural events to balance celebration with environmental awareness.
A Festival Built on Community
Organised by the French Institute of South Africa and co-produced by Bassline, with support from TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa, Fête de la Musique continues to embody the values that have made it successful for more than four decades globally and fifteen years locally.
It is a festival where professional artists perform alongside emerging talent.
Where audiences discover new sounds while reconnecting with familiar favourites.
Where creativity is shared freely and community is built through music.
Fifteen Years Later, the Music Continues
As Johannesburg prepares to celebrate this landmark anniversary, Fête de la Musique remains a powerful reminder of music’s ability to bring people together across backgrounds, generations and cultures.
For one afternoon in June, Victoria Yards will once again become a meeting place for artists, dreamers, families, music lovers and curious first-time visitors.
And true to its founding philosophy, everyone is invited.
Because some of the most memorable musical experiences are the ones that are shared freely.
