The Makhelwane Festival, one of South Africa’s most beloved township lifestyle showcases, returns for its eleventh year with more fire, more flavour, and a deeper sense of home than ever before. The announcement that MÖRDA has officially joined the already star-studded lineup cements this year’s event as a cultural moment not to be missed.

From 12–14 December, the heartbeat of Soweto will pulse through Poka Street in Orlando West and the legendary Thesis Concept Store, drawing thousands to celebrate food, fashion, art, live music, entrepreneurship, and the irreplaceable spirit of South African neighbourliness.

This year’s theme — “Welcome Home” — is more than a slogan. It is a declaration of belonging, a cultural homecoming, and a reminder that, even in a world of uncertainty, the township remains an unshakeable anchor of identity, creativity, and warmth.

A Lineup Rooted in Heritage and Headlined by Icons

With MÖRDA newly added to the bill, Makhelwane Festival 2025 boasts one of its strongest lineups yet. Across two festival days, attendees can immerse themselves in performances from:

  • Monique Bingham

  • Sjava

  • Njelic

  • Russell Zuma

  • WAV Gardn

  • Thandonje

  • Saul Madiope

  • Jah Seed & Admiral

  • Fiji Mageba

  • DJ sets from Musical Maestro, Nicky B, Ke Dineo, Kitchen Mess, Buhle Mbongwa, DJ Jawz, Billion, Tee Illa, Lochive, and many more.

Tickets are available via FIXR or at the venue on festival days.

A Festival Built on the Power of Ubuntu

The word Makhelwane — meaning “neighbour” in isiZulu — captures the essence of this three-day cultural gathering. It speaks not only of proximity, but of responsibility, identity, and shared humanity. The festival carries this message into every corner of its programme, inviting guests to reconnect with the township, its creators, and its future leaders.

Now entering its 11th year, Makhelwane Festival continues to uplift Soweto’s creative economy, champion small businesses, and preserve the township’s artistic voice. The goal is simple but powerful: keep township talent visible, valued, and supported.

The Experience: Three Days of Culture, Courage, and Community

Opening Night — 12 December 2025

Thesis Concept Store — 173 Machaba Drive, Mofolo, Soweto

The festival opens with AboMazenzela: The Art of Starting, a celebration of grit, entrepreneurial courage, and creative innovation. Guests will experience live music, DJ sets, networking, and conversations that spark new ideas and future collaborations.

🍋 The Lemonade Stand: Kiddies Market

A special space for budding entrepreneurs under 15, complete with games, food, workshops, and storytelling aimed at building the next generation of township innovators.

🛍 Makers Market

A vibrant showcase of local artisans and SMMEs, supported by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Gauteng Tourism Authority, and Joburg Tourism — all offering free stalls to encourage economic inclusion.

🎨 Street Art Exhibition

Curated with The Arts Company Soweto (TACS), this exhibition highlights emerging artists whose work captures the visual rhythm of township life.

🍽 Food, Drinks & Lifestyle

Think gourmet street food, curated drinks, tuk-tuk tours, family experiences, fashion displays, gallery moments — all woven into the everyday soul of Soweto.

Welcome Home: A Call to the Nation

Makhelwane Festival 2025 is more than a weekend event; it is a movement.

It invites South Africans from all provinces to travel inward — back to culture, back to community, back to home. It celebrates how fashion, creativity, food, tourism, innovation, and music intersect to create a thriving township ecosystem.

This is a reminder that home is not just a place — it is a people.

And this December, the people of Soweto are ready to welcome you.
