Heineken’s Bar de Change Returns

Helping South African Football Fans Beat the Exchange Rate This Travel Season

For many football fans, travelling abroad to witness the world’s biggest sporting moments is a dream years in the making.

Flights are booked. Accommodation is secured. Match tickets are carefully stored away. Yet once the excitement of arrival fades, another reality often sets in: the exchange rate.

What felt affordable back home can quickly become expensive abroad. A casual drink with friends after a match suddenly requires mental calculations. One beer becomes two conversions. And one spontaneous night out can leave travellers questioning every purchase.

This June, Heineken is bringing back a solution designed to make those moments a little easier.

Following strong consumer demand after its initial launch earlier this year, the brand has announced the return of Bar de Change, a unique travel activation that allows South African and Nigerian travellers to pre-purchase Heineken beers at local prices before departing for the United States and Mexico.

The initiative runs from 4 to 8 June 2026 and arrives just as thousands of football supporters prepare for what is expected to be one of the busiest international travel periods in recent memory.

Turning a Bureau de Change Into a Bar de Change

The concept behind Bar de Change is remarkably simple.

Instead of exchanging money, travellers exchange future beer purchases.

Fans departing from OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos can visit a dedicated Heineken activation, purchase beers at local prices and later redeem them at participating Heineken partner venues across selected cities in the United States and Mexico.

The programme was originally introduced during the Easter travel season, where it quickly resonated with consumers looking for ways to manage the impact of unfavourable exchange rates while travelling abroad.

The positive response prompted Heineken to expand the initiative to additional airports and destinations ahead of the upcoming football travel rush.

When Exchange Rates Influence Social Moments

While exchange rates are often viewed as a financial issue, they can also influence how travellers experience destinations and connect with others.

Many fans save for months to afford flights, accommodation and transport. Yet once they arrive overseas, everyday social experiences can become unexpectedly expensive.

The quick drink before kick-off. The celebration after a victory. The extra round with old friends reunited through football.

These moments often form the most memorable parts of a trip, but rising costs can sometimes discourage travellers from fully embracing them.

Bar de Change was designed to remove some of that friction by allowing fans to lock in local beer prices before departure and spend less time calculating exchange rates during their travels.

The result is more freedom to focus on what matters most: the experience.

Built for a Global Football Summer

According to Alex Drake, the timing could not be more important.

“This is set to be one of the biggest international travel periods football fans have seen in years, but it’s also likely to be one of the most expensive,” says Drake.

“For South Africans and Nigerians, the reality is that exchange rates can influence everything from the bars you choose to visit and whether you stay for one more round with friends.”

“Bar de Change was created to remove that barrier and enable more elevated social moments. Because nobody should have to convert currencies before deciding whether to have one more beer.”

“And while we can’t influence the exchange rate, we can create more memorable social moments.”

Expanded Access Across Africa

Following the success of the first activation at OR Tambo International Airport, Heineken has expanded the programme to reach more travellers across Southern and West Africa.

The 2026 activation will be available at:

  • OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg
  • Cape Town International Airport
  • Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos

Travellers can participate between 4 and 8 June 2026.

Where Travellers Can Redeem Their Beers

Beer purchases made through Bar de Change can be redeemed at participating Heineken partner bars across selected destinations in the United States and Mexico.

In Atlanta, Georgia, participating venues include STATS Brewpub, Westside Motor Lounge, Brewhouse, F1 Arcade, Hard Rock Café and Signia Hotel.

In Mexico City, participating locations include La Unica, Don Pling, Non Solo Polanco, Villa Rica, Porter, Spuntino, Sotomayor, Pacífica Polanco, Gardela, Quinquela, Blanco Colima, Puerto Prendes, La Cocina del Bizco, Castizo, Dolce Tango and Bodegón Victoria.

Additional participating venues are available throughout Monterrey, further expanding redemption options for travelling supporters.

More Than Beer

Although the activation revolves around beer, Heineken says the idea behind Bar de Change goes much deeper.

At its core, the initiative aims to protect the social experiences that make travel meaningful.

The unexpected conversation after a match.

The reunion with friends from different countries.

The spontaneous celebration that becomes the story people tell long after the tournament has ended.

These moments often define travel far more than the destinations themselves.

As football supporters prepare to cross continents in pursuit of unforgettable memories, Bar de Change offers one less calculation and one more reason to focus on the people, places and experiences that make the journey worthwhile.

Travellers making use of the activation are encouraged to share their experiences on social media by tagging Heineken and showcasing the moments that kept the good times flowing across borders.
