South Africa’s gaming culture is no longer on the sidelines — it’s centre stage, competitive, and commanding serious attention. And this year, the stakes are higher than ever.
The MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience 2026 has officially returned, bringing with it a nationwide esports showdown that stretches across malls, cities, and communities — all building toward one defining moment: the crowning of a national champion.
With eight malls, two major titles, and a R350,000 prize pool, this is not just a tournament. It’s a movement.
Where South Africa’s Gamers Meet, Compete, and Rise
Now in its fourth year, the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience — presented by Hyprop in partnership with MTN — has evolved into one of the country’s most inclusive and accessible competitive gaming platforms.
From April through August, the competition travels nationwide, transforming everyday shopping destinations into high-energy esports arenas — spaces where first-time players and seasoned competitors collide.
According to Christie Stanbridge, Brand and Campaigns Marketing Manager at Hyprop, the secret to SHIFT’s growth lies in its accessibility:
“It meets players where they already are — in the malls they visit every week — and gives them a real chance to compete, connect and win.”
Two Games. One National Dream.
At the heart of the competition are two titles that couldn’t be more different — yet equally electrifying.
- EA FC 26 — the flagship football simulation that continues to dominate competitive gaming spaces
- Beat Saber — a high-intensity VR experience where reflexes and rhythm collide
Together, they create a tournament that reflects the diversity of South Africa’s gaming community — from strategic thinkers to high-speed performers.
The Road to the Finals
Each stop on the tour follows a dynamic format:
- Online qualifiers open the door for players across the country
- Three-day in-mall events bring the action to life in front of live audiences
- Top performers advance to the national stage
The journey culminates at Canal Walk Shopping Centre from 26 to 30 August 2026, where the best of the best will battle for national glory.
Tournament operations are led by ACGL, one of South Africa’s most respected esports organisers — ensuring a professional, competitive standard throughout.
Inside the Main Event: EA FC 26™
The EA FC 26™ tournament is structured for both intensity and opportunity:
- 12 heats per weekend
- Top 2 players per heat advance to the Mall Final
- Top 4 online qualifiers secure direct entry into the final
From there, one winner emerges — earning a place in the National Football Final on 30 August, competing for a R50,000 prize pool.
Adding to the pressure, defending champion Hamza Moosa automatically qualifies to defend his title.
At mall level, top performers are rewarded with Hyprop gift cards:
- 1st place: R2,500
- 2nd place: R1,500
- 3rd place: R1,000
Feel the Beat: MTN’s Beat Saber Challenge
Running alongside the football competition is MTN’s Beat Saber tournament — hosted on its Battle+ esports platform.
Here, the rules are simple: highest score over three days wins.
Each mall’s top performer advances to the National Final on 20 September, where another R50,000 prize pool awaits.
Muyiwa Ladipo, Chief Consumer Officer at MTN South Africa, highlights the deeper vision:
“Gaming is one of the fastest-growing passions in the country… we’re giving gamers a chance to compete, connect, and win in ways that go far beyond the screen.”
