At Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where first impressions shape lasting memories, one story rising from behind the front desk is quietly redefining what it means to grow in hospitality.
For Zandile Myeni, the journey to becoming Assistant Front Office Manager at Sibaya Lodge didn’t begin with a carefully mapped career plan. It began with a single phone call — answered by chance, but followed with purpose.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Long before titles and leadership responsibilities, Myeni was a young girl visiting her mother at work — her mother, who was employed at Wild Coast Sun.
During school holidays, those visits became informal lessons in hospitality. She watched, observed, asked questions — absorbing an industry she didn’t yet know would define her future.
Then came the moment.
“I answered a call at switchboard, not even knowing it was the manager,” she recalls. Days later, she was asked to cover a shift.
What seemed small at the time became pivotal.
“I loved every minute of it. That is when I knew I didn’t want to go back.”
A Foundation Built on Strength and Values
Raised in Port Shepstone by her mother and grandmother, Myeni’s upbringing was anchored in faith, discipline, and resilience — values that would later become her compass in a demanding, people-driven industry.
At the time of her discovery, she had been pursuing a teaching degree, with aspirations of working with children. But clarity came quickly.
Hospitality wasn’t just an option — it was a calling.
Building a Career, One Role at a Time
Myeni officially joined Sibaya Lodge in December 2012, stepping into the role of reservationist during one of the busiest periods of the year — the festive season.
It was a baptism of fire, but also a proving ground.
Years in reservations sharpened her operational understanding, but it was her transition to the front desk that transformed her perspective entirely.
“At reception, you are the face of the company,” she explains. “You learn how to read people, manage expectations and stand firm.”
It is here that Myeni mastered what cannot be taught in textbooks — the art of human connection.
Investing in Growth and Excellence
While experience shaped her instinct, Myeni made a deliberate decision to strengthen her academic foundation.
Through Sibaya’s bursary programme, she pursued her studies at the International Hotel School, earning:
- An International Diploma in Hospitality Management (2021)
- A National Diploma (2022)
Her journey of learning is far from over, with plans already in motion to pursue an advanced diploma in management.
This commitment reflects a mindset that separates professionals from leaders — the willingness to keep growing, even after success.
Stepping Into Leadership
Her recent promotion to Assistant Front Office Manager marks a defining chapter — not just in her career, but in her identity.
“I am living in my answered prayer era,” she says, with quiet conviction.
It’s a statement that captures both gratitude and awareness — the understanding that leadership is not simply earned, but entrusted.
In an environment where pressure is constant and expectations are high, Myeni relies on one core principle: knowing herself.
“I know who I am and what I am capable of. That keeps me calm, even on the busiest days.”
Leading with Heart in a High-Pressure Industry
What sets Myeni apart is not just her technical skill, but her philosophy.
Her leadership is rooted in:
- Kindness
- Consistency
- Authenticity
She believes that success in hospitality is not just about service — it’s about people.
“You will be tested, but do not lose yourself,” she advises those entering the industry. “And always be kind.”
It’s a message that resonates in an industry where emotional intelligence often matters as much as operational excellence.
Staying Grounded Beyond the Front Desk
Outside of her professional role, Myeni finds balance in simplicity — cooking for her family, sharing meals, and staying connected to her roots.
Despite living away from home, her bond with her support system remains unshaken.
“They carry me in prayer every day,” she says.
That connection, she believes, is her anchor.
A New Generation of Leadership
Bubbly yet grounded, ambitious yet humble, Myeni represents a new wave of hospitality leadership — one that values purpose as much as performance.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that careers are not always planned — sometimes, they are discovered in moments we least expect.
And sometimes, all it takes is answering the right call.
A Personal Touch
If she could welcome any guest to Sibaya Lodge?
Her answer comes with a smile: Nomzamo Mbatha.
Because even as she rises through the ranks, Myeni hasn’t lost the warmth and authenticity that first drew her to hospitality.
