The Cape Town Folk ’n Acoustic Music Festival is proud to present an all-woman affair to take concertgoers on a rhythmic journey with Latin, folk, rock and jazz tunes. An exciting lineup of incredible South African artists featuring singers Karen Zoid, Nomfundo Xaluva, Abigail Petersen, Jennifer Eaves, Amanda Tiffin, Nhoza Sitholwana, Amy Campbell, Leonie Le Roux, Micaela Kleinsmith, Jasmine Minter and Anathi Mobo will be backed by The Lady Day Big Band.
About the artists
Abigail Petersen is a versatile singer, pianist and songwriter whose career spans across performance, stage, television and education. She has had many performances in South Africa and abroad and has received tremendous recognition in the music industry. Abigail Petersen won the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition in 2003 and was nominated for a Naledi Theatre Award for best female performance in a musical.
Nomfundo Xaluva is a two-time Metro FM Music award-winner whose musical training started at the young age of twelve. She has obtained a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies, released two fantastic albums, graced every important stage in South Africa, and currently heads the jazz vocal department at the University of Cape Town.
Multi-award-winning artist Karen Zoid is celebrated as the queen of South African rock. She released her first solo album, Poles Apart, in 2002 and has since become a crucial part of the local South African music industry. Karen Zoid also holds a SAMA for Best Female Artist and has shared the stage with international acts like John Mayer, Annie Lennox, Metallica, Simple Plan, and UB40.
Jennifer Eaves is a folk musician and singer/ songwriter who is a classically trained University of Cape Town music student with over 20 years of experience as a full-time musician. She has released three solo albums, the most recent being Half of You, released in 2019. Jennifer Eaves currently focuses on composing, performing, and touring with the Jenny and the Jameses trio, incorporating traditional folk and bluegrass together with Jennifer’s solo material.
Cape Town-based vocalist, musician and musical theatre actress Amy Campbell has been a professional musician for more than ten years and wears many hats as the seasoned performer she is. She has performed on many stages worldwide, including the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden, the Arcevia Jazz Festival in Italy and jazz clubs in Australia and Namibia.
Leonie Le Roux is a versatile singer and has become a powerhouse in the music industry, being able to move effortlessly from Swing, Jazz, Disco, Pop, Rock and romantic ballads. Throughout her music career, she has performed with many established artists, such as Sybil, Claire Philips and Amy Jones, as well as household names Emo Adams, Vicky Sampson, Leslie Kleinsmith and Vernon Castle, to name a few.
Anathi Mobo is a vocalist from Cape Town who is currently the lead vocalist for the Little Giants Big Band and The Lady Day Big Band. In 2018/19, she was selected as one of the soloists for the Artscape Youth Jazz festival and the lead vocalist for the EduJazz big band performing annually at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Anathi Mobo was also selected as the vocalist for the Standard Bank National Youth Band under the direction of pianist, composer and arranger Afrika Mkhize.
Singer/ songwriter Nomawthu Sitsholwana was born in the Eastern Cape and now resides in Cape Town. Her genre of preference is something she calls ‘African fusion’, which is a mixture of Blues, Jazz, and traditional African music. She has shared the stage with artists such as Riaan Smit and Dale Collins and has done studio sessions for bands Freshly Ground, Crimson House and The Roots Grown Deep. Nomawthu Sitsholwana usually performs as a solo or duo act, but she has also managed to put together a band of brass, bass, drums and keys to compliment her unique genre.
Singer Jasmine Minter made her first solo debut at the Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Festival in 2015. Shortly after, the artist shared the stage with musicians like Majozi and Prime Circle. As the daughter of singer and saxophone player Gavin Minter, Jasmine was born into music and can even recall the moment she joined her dad on stage at Kirstenbosch as a young girl.
Micaela Kleinsmith is a singer-songwriter/ guitarist who has accomplished many different things in her short career. Over the years, she has performed at the Grand Arena, Waterfront Amphitheatre, Cape Town International Airport and Jazz on the Lawn. In 2016 Micaela Kleinsmith was a contestant on SA Idols and was also chosen as one of the top 10 singer-songwriters in Cape Town in the KFM singer-songwriter competition.
Amanda Tiffin is a versatile artist who has performed extensively as a vocalist and pianist at numerous jazz venues, concert halls, festivals and theatres. She has graced stages not only in South Africa but also in London, Japan, Taiwan, Paris and Italy. Amanda Tiffin is a highly sought-after Musical Director and is currently the musical director and principal arranger for The Lady Day Big Band.
The Lady Day Big Band is South Africa’s first all-women professional big band, founded in 2018 by South African music royalty Lana Crowster, Amanda Tiffin and Kelly Bell. The band aims to promote social unity, upliftment and a safe space for women in response to the #MeToo movement.
