Following the success of the four Throwback Cinema titles screened during May, Ster-Kinekor is continuing this popular promotion through June and into July. Bringing back much-loved movie titles from the past for rescreening is enticing movie lovers back into the cinema. And the added bonus is that the movie ticket price for all these titles is a throwback price too, at just R50 per ticket.

The four titles that will be screened for one week each during June take us from drag queens in the Australian outback to gladiators in Roman times, with a mummy or two thrown in for good measure, before we once again travel back to the future.

From Friday 07 June, you can hop on to the pink bus and join The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It’s your chance to revisit this poignant, funny movie focused on two drag performers and a transgender woman who travel across the Australian outback to perform their unique style of cabaret at a small resort in the remote town of Alice Springs.

This Australian film blitzed overseas box offices, it caused a near riot at the Cannes Film Festival, and won an Academy Award®. It’s fun, daring, over-the-top and unforgettable. It’s a road trip movie with attitude… and the occasional frock! Written and directed by Stephan Elliott, this 1994 classic stars Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp in the title roles.

The second Throwback Cinema title for the month, releasing on 14 June, takes us back to Ancient Rome for all the action inGladiator. A powerful former Roman General, Maximus, sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery. “Father of a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I shall have my vengeance in this life or the next…”.

Released in 2000, this Ridley Scott directed film stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen in the title roles, supported by an all-star cast including Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi and Djimon Hounsou.

From the gladiators of Rome, the third Throwback Cinema title in June takes us to the mummies of Egypt. Released in 1999, The Mummy is directed by Stephen Sommers and stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah and South African actor Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep.

At an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreak havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love. The film will screen for one week from 21 June.

Two throwback films will be screened from 28 June, one taking us back to the future and the other promising eternal sunshine. Back to the Future 2 picks up where the original film ended.  After visiting 2015, Marty McFly must repeat his visit to 1955 to prevent disastrous changes to 1985… without interfering with his first trip. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, this 1989 classic stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson who return to take up their iconic roles in the second instalment.

For lovers of arthouse films, Ster-Kinekor is also releasing Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind at Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg and V&A Waterfront Nouveau in Cape Town from 28 June for a week. In this sci-fi drama romance, when their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.

Released in 2004, the film stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet and Tom Wilkinson, and is directed by Michel Gondry.

We’ve had a wonderful time going through the catalogues to select the films, and we are sure everyone who books a ticket to watch one of them will have a similar big screen experience.”

Ster-Kinekor has lined up some all-time greats for the month of June. And, with the ticket price at just R50, this is your chance to revisit some iconic movie blasts from the past, or perhaps to discover them for the first time.

Throwback Cinema titles will be screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Fourways, Sandton and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Ilanga, Mbombela; Gateway in Umhlanga; Somerset Mall, Somerset West; and Tygervalley and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
