URBAN CIRCUS: An Intoxicating Tumble through the Concrete Jungle

The Cirk, in association with YES SIR! Events, presents URBAN CIRCUS for the first time at The Teatro, Montecasino from the 13th to 15th of September 2024 for 5 shows only!

After sold out seasons at the National Arts Festival, Hilton Festival and The Cirk’s venue in Cresta, the producers of this exhilarating show have decided to bring audiences an even BETTER and BIGGER version of URBAN CIRCUS.

URBAN CIRCUS is, at its throbbing organic heart, an acrobatic love letter to life in the city.

Developed as a collaboration between the technical prowess of The Cirk, it’s incredibly skilled performers, and a magical narrative directed by Cirque du Soleil alumnus Daniel Buckland, Urban Circus uses acrobatics, acting, juggling and seamless ensemble work to take the audience on a tire-burning, nail-biting journey through a day in the city.

“The show is composed of eleven vignettes, each following a central character’s interaction with different parts of the city.” says Director Daniel Buckland “Using the explosive language of circus life, Urban Circus is a story of survival, struggle and fun in the city. It portrays a delicate and acrobatic dance through the thrills and dangers of urban life.”

With a variety of high level acrobatic and circus acts including aerial hoop, trapeze, balancing chairs and many more, in combination with seamless ensemble play, physical comedy and character work, Urban Circus paints a lurid and fantastical portrait of a desperate dance for survival in the city – a head on collision daydream in traffic turns into an impeccable aerial ballet, workers packed into elevators transform into a delicious tangle of limbs, a performance review high above becomes a high stakes acrobatic boxing match, a drunken stagger home from a night out becomes a wild and comic dance of brutal grace and delicacy.

Urban Circus pulsates with the joy and life of the city. It’s a reminder of the magic hidden in the mundane, with acrobatic ecstasy waiting around every street corner. The spectacle of circus, the magic of theatre and the incredible choral power created by the Cirk team continues to excite and inspire the audiences it plays to.

The performers include (in alphabetical order): Brian Ngobese, Carmen Jooste, Claudia Moruzzi, Demi Wentzel, Kirsty Becker, Lufuno Matodzi, Marco Vargas, Nataniel Pires, Nathan Shatkovsky, Phillip Kleynhans and Zenzele Letsoela.

Urban Circus will leave audiences, young and old, seeking fun, excitement, adventure, and connection in their own city of Gold, fully exhilarated.
