For nearly three decades, the National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) has done more than host competitions. It has nurtured confidence, ignited creativity and provided a national stage for young South Africans to discover who they are through artistic expression.
Now, the NEA has announced its 2026 Programme — a multi-layered celebration of performance, visual artistry and youth development that continues its legacy of shaping talent across the country.
Since 1997, more than 610,000 young performers have stepped into the safe, structured and inspiring environment created by the NEA. For the Academy, participation in the arts is not simply about trophies or medals. It is about transformation — what the NEA calls the Magic of the Arts.
Here’s what 2026 holds.
1. 23rd NEA Young Performer Awards Competition
One of the most significant competitions of its kind in South Africa, the annual NEA Young Performer Awards Competition opens its stage to talented young amateur performers in dance, drama and music who excelled in any eisteddfod or similar event during 2025.
Participants will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals — and a share of R20,000 in cash prizes.

2. 14th Young Artist Awards Competition
Since its launch in 2013, the Young Artist Awards Competition has become a respected platform for top achievers in the Creative and Visual Arts.
The competition recognises and promotes young visual artists across three structured categories:

Entry Level: Grade 0 – 3

Junior: Grade 4 – 7
-
Senior: Grade 8 – Open Sections
Other organisations are invited to nominate their top achievers under their organisation’s name. Parents may also enter their children individually. Schools, institutions and private studios that do not ordinarily participate in eisteddfods or festivals are encouraged to enter through an internal selection process.
All adjudication is conducted by a panel of judges, and their decisions are final. The process unfolds over three rounds.
An exhibition featuring the artworks of all grade winners — and the announcement of the winners of the three categories — will take place at the Alice Art Gallery in Ruimsig, Roodepoort, close to Youth Day on 14 June 2026.

3. National Eisteddfod of South Africa® 2026
The flagship project of the NEA, the National Eisteddfod of South Africa will officially open its 2026 Call for Entries on 1 April 2026.
The National Eisteddfod has no limits. Participants of all ages — individuals, groups, schools and organisations — are invited to enter across music, dance, drama and the creative arts.
For activities adjudicated during August to early September, the deadline is 31 July 2026. For regions adjudicated during mid-September to early October, entries close on 31 August 2026.

For the NEA, the eisteddfod experience is not a “Who’s got talent?” spectacle. It is a developmental journey grounded in cultural diversity, personal growth and artistic integrity.
