More Than a Game: How a New Partnership Is Strengthening Sport’s Power to Change Lives in South Africa

In South Africa, sport has always been about more than competition.

It has been a source of unity during moments of national triumph, a platform for overcoming division, and a powerful force for hope in communities facing some of society’s toughest challenges.

From dusty township fields to community sports programmes that provide safe spaces for young people, sport continues to play a unique role in shaping lives far beyond the final whistle.

Now, one of South Africa’s leading corporate foundations is stepping forward to help strengthen that impact.

The FirstRand Foundation (FRF), the corporate foundation of the FirstRand Group, has been appointed as the new Country Patron of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa, joining Mercedes-Benz South Africa in supporting one of the country’s most respected sport-for-development organisations.

The appointment marks more than a new corporate partnership. It represents a shared commitment to using sport as a catalyst for social change, youth empowerment, and community development across South Africa.

Investing in More Than Sport

For more than two decades, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa has championed the belief that sport can be a powerful tool for addressing some of the country’s most pressing social challenges.

Through a network of community-based organisations operating in more than 100 communities, the Foundation supports programmes that use sport to tackle issues including poverty, homelessness, gangsterism, violence, drug abuse, discrimination, and HIV/AIDS.

These initiatives do more than teach athletic skills.

They help young people build confidence, resilience, leadership abilities, and a sense of belonging.

Since its inception, Laureus South Africa has raised more than R100 million for projects that have positively impacted the lives of over 100,000 young people.

The Foundation’s success demonstrates what is possible when sport is viewed not only as recreation, but as a vehicle for long-term social development.

A Shared Vision for Positive Change

As Country Patron, the FirstRand Foundation will play a pivotal role in supporting the Foundation’s mission through both financial investment and advocacy.

The role extends beyond funding.

It includes actively engaging stakeholders, participating in fundraising and awareness initiatives, and helping increase public visibility around the transformative work being carried out through Laureus-supported programmes.

For the FirstRand Foundation, the partnership aligns closely with its broader purpose of creating meaningful societal impact.

According to Konehali Gugushe, Head of Social Investing at FirstRand, the appointment represents an opportunity to further the organisation’s commitment to shared prosperity.

“Joining the Laureus family by becoming the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation SA Country Patron aligns perfectly with our commitment to driving positive societal impact. Our hopes would be that we really get an opportunity to express and live the purpose of FirstRand, to create a future of shared prosperity.”

Gugushe believes sport occupies a uniquely important place within South African society.

“We believe that sport, particularly in South Africa, is one of those things that acts as glue for our society. For us to be associated with Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, an organisation that stands for excellence and passion, is exciting.”

Why Sport Remains One of Society’s Most Powerful Tools

Few platforms possess the ability to bring people together quite like sport.

It transcends language, geography, social background, and circumstance.

Within communities, organised sporting programmes often become safe spaces where young people develop critical life skills while building positive relationships and aspirations for the future.

The impact can be profound.

Through structured programmes, participants learn teamwork, discipline, communication, leadership, accountability, and resilience — qualities that extend far beyond the playing field.

For many young people facing difficult circumstances, sport can provide mentorship, stability, and opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.

This belief sits at the heart of the Laureus model.

Rather than focusing solely on athletic achievement, the Foundation supports initiatives that harness sport’s broader developmental potential.

As Gugushe explains, “Sport is a uniquely powerful vehicle for teaching life skills, building community, and creating opportunities. We look forward to providing the platform and investment necessary to help Laureus SA scale its effective programmes and to continue to make a long-lasting difference in the lives of young people.”

Building Stronger Communities Through Partnership

The appointment of the FirstRand Foundation as Country Patron comes at a significant time for the organisation.

As demand for community support programmes continues to grow, sustained partnerships play an increasingly important role in ensuring that successful initiatives can reach more young people and communities.

For Laureus South Africa, corporate partners serve as more than sponsors.

They become advocates for the transformative potential of sport and help amplify stories of success, resilience, and positive change.

According to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa Chairman, Bryan Habana, the role of Country Patron is central to the organisation’s continued growth.

“We are delighted to welcome the FirstRand Foundation into the Laureus family in this pivotal capacity alongside Mercedes-Benz South Africa,” says Habana.

“The Country Patron is the corporate cornerstone of our local work. Beyond providing core funding, the FirstRand Foundation will lend its significant brand visibility and extensive network to raise awareness and advocate for the transformative power of Sport for Development programmes, which is instrumental in helping us tell the stories of hope and change we witness every day.”

Creating a Future of Shared Prosperity

South Africa’s greatest challenges cannot be solved by any single organisation acting alone.

Progress requires collaboration between communities, civil society, government, and the private sector.

The partnership between the FirstRand Foundation and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa reflects this reality.

It recognises that meaningful change happens when investment, expertise, and purpose come together around a common goal.

For the thousands of young people participating in Laureus-supported programmes across the country, the impact of this partnership may ultimately be measured not in funding announcements or corporate commitments, but in opportunities created, confidence built, and futures transformed.

Because when sport is used as a force for good, its greatest victories are often achieved far away from the scoreboard.
